It depends on the occasion and what the host is wearing. For instance:

Scenario 1: You are at a wedding and wear a beautiful white gown. Rude or not? RUDE! VERY RUDE!!!

Scenario 2: You are at a normal house party and you are wearing a pink summer dress while the host is wearing an every-day cami and skirt. NOT RUDE

Scenario 3: You have been invited to a Halloween costume party. The host is dressed up as a fairy tale princess and you come as a vampire. NOT RUDE

Scenario 4: The host is throwing a birthday party for herself, and arrives in a lavender sleeveless dress. You show up in a red dress with sequins and your hair is in an updo. RUDE!

How are you supposed to know if the person throwing the party is a fashion oooh uh uh? It's not rude it's just sad...( As if I care about what people wear) By the way are you sure that you were dressed better than the hostess? Personally I could give a ****.

Noo way!!! you're just being yourself, too bad the hostess doesn't have a better dress sense. Unless off course the hostess has said something to you about you upscaling her in the dress department at her own party. Then it's a whole different ball game. But yeah..Look HOT!

Just think of it this way; if you were the one throwing the party, and you had a dress that made you look like a million bucks, and someone showed up and their outfit made them look like 2 million bucks, how would you feel? Upset, p/o-ed, not want to talk with them?

Yes. The host or hostess should be the center of attenttion, just as the bride should be the center of attention at her wedding.

Edit: I can't believe what jerks a lot of the women answering here are. You are being invited to a person's party. You ask things about the party before attending, such as how you should dress. Doing so is only polite. That you don't consider such things simply shows a basic rudeness and selfishness in itself.

If you just pick something out of your closet and go to the party and do look better than the host then I wouldn't worry.
If it was intentional and you knew what the host was wearing or what they normally wear, then I would consider it to be a rude act.

Absolutely not. What, are you expected to call up the host/hostess and say, "excuse me, I just want to know what you'll be wearing so I don't make you look bad"? That's just silly. Dress your best and if you show him/her up, they'll remember to look better the next time they throw a party.

It isn't rude. It's embarassing to be overdressed though, but if the host looks bad, it's not your fault they didn't put more time into perfecting their looks for their party. You don't even know what they are going to wear, and you should just wear what looks nice and appropriate for the occasion.

Just so long as you aren't going just to upstage her, than it's not rude. Unless it's a wedding, baby shower or birthday. In which case it's not cool to upstage the person, as it's their special day.
