I get horrid headaches since I started red yeast rice and Niacin non- flush. Is this a normal side effect? I only stared taking this via Dr'.s reccomendation instead of Lipator. it's only been 3 days. Will these headaches go away, as my body adjusts to this? I follow the rec dosage too.

The side effects listed for red yeast rice are an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, hives), unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by flu-like symptoms. Other less serious side effects are upset stomach, heartburn, flatulence, or other digestive or gastrointesinal symptoms, and dizziness.

DO NOT drink alcohol while taking red yeast rice! It is also advised to not take Niacin with red yeast rice.

I looked up the side effects of non-flushing niacin and there wasn't anything listed about headaches. But, when I looked up the side effects of niacin it does state headaches. I have used the regular niacin and did not get headaches and I took it with the red yeast rice also. You might want to talk to your doctor or keep trying for a few more days and see if your body adjust to this supplement.

This is not an answer to your question but I just had to pipe in that there are other alternatives to Lipator, if this combo turns out to not be for you.

Apple Pectin, the kind you use to make homemade jelly, is a soluble fiber that helps reduce cholesterol. Take 1/2 teaspoon to 1-1/2 teaspoons daily, in juice. Also Lecithin, a food available in liquid, granules or softgels. Some folks have found Cinnamon, which they were taking to lower their blood sugar, also lowered cholesterol by a few points.

And Now Foods makes a Red Yeast Rice combo that has several herbs good for the liver (the place where cholesterol is manufactured).

If I were in your situation, I would go off both supplements for a few days, then start just the red yeast rice by itself for a few days, then add the niacin and see if the headaches come back. Also, when you talk to your health care provider, make sure you have purchased the correct dose.

I can't see the red yeast rice as the cause of the headaches. The niacin on the other hand is known as a migrain/headache remedy, but not everyone responds the same way to the niacin, and it could actually cause headaches. Make sure you are getting enough water a day when you take niacin, sometimes that is all you need.

Don't know anything about the niacin non flush, but I take red yeast rice twice daily with no headaches. If your Doc suggested it , you should ask him.

I've had no side effects from red yeast rice. The niacin non-flush may be causing the headaches. I've had friends who had to stop taking it because of them. I've never taken it.

Personally, I don't think the headaches are worth the suffering.

I have taken red rice yeast with good results, I have headaches so couldn't say if it was related or not. Haven't taken niacin.

It seems like every one is trying Red Rice try this ...... walk every day one mile or more, no red meats, no fry foods, no pastries, cookies they have hydrated oils, no fast foods, take Vitamins magnesium citrate 1oz a day, zinc, potassium, Bs more complex carbohydrates in his diet if he can stay on this plan for 3 months he WILL see a difference, those drugs will eventually ruin his liver loosing just a few pounds will make a big difference
