no, you shouldn't ignore windows updates. There are still windows updates that will affect the security of your computer even if you do use Firefox. Your internet connection is still governed by windows operating system which is not the browser.

It is true that updating windows has caused many problems for many people. But they do update security features not just for IE alone. I believe in better safe than sorry. Just make sure if you do update to create a restore point on your computer so you can set it back if you have any problems.

Even with firefox you still need to update windows, also keep your antivirus up to date and it wouldn't hurt to keep the hardware drivers up to date.
Microsoft releases security patches usually on the second tuesday of every month and you should always install the critical updates.
You can also get all updates roled in to one from http://www.autopatcher.com This also includes updates for java, flash and various tools and registry tweeks

NO NO NO, unpatched windows vulnerabilities can lead to your machine getting worms, viruses and trojans (ie blaster) without you doing anything more than simply turning on your machine and connecting to the internet.
