The main reason is that the majority is rather ignorant. Most people "hate" something merely because they haven't been around it and are rather scared of it, kind of like a child in a dark room. Much of the American public has not met the Muslim religion and culture, and is therefore afraid of it, just like a child.
It does not help when the media and the American government - particularily the Bush administration, sorry Bush lovers - create an image that all members of Islam are extremists and thus terrorists; it's just like telling said child that the dark is full of bogeymen. (Note: in the minds of many Americans Islam = Muslim and vice versa).
I have been living in Europe for the past three years and I must say that in France there are so many Muslims this ignorant, fearful attitude is virtually nonexistent.

Because of a few people that happen to be involved in certain activity. And the media spends it to make it seem like they are the prime people that are committing terrorist attacks. And we just don't know that they are so many non muslims, americans that are terrorist existing right here in the USA.

guilt by association....
ok , not a good answer but that's the brunt of it....most of the worst terrorist attacks have been carried out by those professing to be of the Islamic faith....If the Muslim community had made more of an effort in the beginning to distances themselves from radical clerics that call for jihad against infidels and isolated those with this radical agenda it might not be as bad today as it is.....but they didn't..they didn't run off these radical clerics and brand them as "cult leaders".. they also, allowed a "strict" form of Islam to flourish ..these nuts used their dogma as an example an excuse for years and the Muslim community didn't band together and do enough to denounce this ideology or the use of their holy book for this purpose...hences, the ideology of the Taliban and others became accepted to a degree among the Muslim community....basically tolerance gone bad.....now the radical is intertwined with the moderate...and when people hear of Muslims they don't know who is friend and who is foe.....and when in doubt ..best to be safe than sorry....so think the worst until shown otherwise...it not right...but that is what has happened...
thats just my opinion on it........
