The second answer has it right. Water displacement the 40th try.

WD stands for Water Displacement. I believe it was the 40th try to invent such a product, so that's how the number got stuck to it.

Southern saying: There are only two things you need in life - WD-40 and duct tape. If it moves and it shouldn't, use the duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use the WD-40.

WD is water displacement, and the 40 is how much it can lube something up, if you get 2 glasses and fill them with wd 40 in one, and wd 60 or 20 in another, and drop small beads in them both, you can see the difference in the speeds as they fall.
