Goths aren't distinguishing themselves from their own; they're distinguishing themselves from a society that they has become too consumerist and conformist. It's a common refrain in "alternative" circles, but the point is made. The difference comes from the mentality of how they perceive the world; not the clothes. The clothes and makeup are simply endemic of the subculture.

Young people who belong to any group, whether that group is the footbal team, the science club, the preppies, the goths, the punks, the emos, or whatever, do tend to comform to a tribal mindset. if they say they want to be different, chances are, they mean different from their parents, different from the parts of society that they don't like, etc. They don't mean they don't want to belong to SOMETHING.
As people age, sometimes they find out more about themselves that makes them individuals. That doesn't mean they don't still want to belong to the tribe as well. So, you do see some pretty old goths (the movement did start in 1977, you know). But being different or the same isn't the point- identifying with the people, places, and things that please you is the point.

The Gothic lifestyle isn't about being different. It's about living in the darker, morbid sides of life. It's about realizing the difference between what is real in life, and what your parents tried to bulls**t you into believing. True Goths know and embrace the fact that life isn't about sunshine, butterflies, and warm fuzzies all the time. So get out of your chair, put on your darkest clothes, and come to the realization that the world is actually darker and more sinister than most people would have you believe.

all the sub groups in society are simply falling into a trap. the powers that be make groups b c and d look different from the main group a. in reality, all the groups are puppeteered by the man. the solution - never join a group. always question authority.

People who go out of their way to look different and be a part of a group that all look the same, arent really different. Theyre robots and drones just like the rest of the human beings on this earth.lol

Posers and insecure teenyboppers do conform to each other, but adult goths are goth because they enjoy it and prefer living that way. So, in response to your question, not all of them do, and no.
