I found this description in the urban dictionary:
Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

hehe tis pretty apt really

basically there are a lot of common things that ppkl can agree *are* EMO - but not every emo has all or many of these things. Its like saying someones goth there are so many diff interpretations of that, emo's seem to be even harder to say exactly what one is cause there are such varying opinions.

they deff arent all cutters, but with *HIM* lyrics about cutting and it being a *teen* issue with self harm due to emotional issues, yes a fair amount of emo's do cut, but not all, they do mostly listen to a lot of emo music though which tends to have teen angst lyrics to some degree.

............... oh and they usually have really sad hair ;)

From what I know, emo is a type of music that is often considered to be overly emotional and dramatic about the dark side of people and their lives, or the world in general. Lyrics often express the frustrations of being very depressed. "Emo" people are a horribly stereo-typed group that can be confused with goths (maybe its the darkness of them both? :P) and are evily connected with cutting. Cutting is not an "emo" activity, anyone can do it. Cutting helps the person feel distracted from their overwhelming destructive and depressing feelings. Sometimes it's to block out the harmfull thoughts that cloud their heads every waking second. Someone does not have to "look" emo to cut, or to like emo music. First rule of all stereo-types: never assume one trait often associated with a stereo-type is always true!

Emo-Emotional. Especially overly emotional.
Emo is a form of music, If you listen to the lyrics you can tell there very whiny(sorry), heartfelt, drastic and emotional!
"Emo" Kids don't Necissarly cut themselves either. The broker down the street could cut him self. Yes, cutting can be involved in Emotional music, simply because when some-one cuts themselves it is said to "release emotions" and "calm someon down". Which is where the emotional music comes in.
If you do know an "emo kid" That does cut him self, he is very cliche. Yet, you at the emotional music, to an overly emotional person, you result in a venting of emotions-Like cutting!
As for who came up with the short term of "emotional" i cannot say, but it seems to be pretty popular for the angsty young ones.

I once saw in this movie that Emo's are more angry than sad so they don't cry they cut themselves it gives them a feeling of release like there are different ways they cut themselves for different things. If only they knew it was ok to cry any time not just sometimes they just don't know how to release their emotions any other way.

The name came from a dead music styles a couple decades ago. They are called this because most people who listened to emo music followed the same lifestyles, clothing etc... they cut themselves for many reason. 1) to fit the stereotype 2) they like pain 3)to release the emotion buliding up inside. lots of people are very sad and it helps. i know from experience

That's not all emo, I'm not really a big fan of the Emo subculture, but not all emos cut themself, youre probably refering to the My Chemical Romance/Dashboard Confessional era wanna-bes

True Emo is emotive hardcore, or whiny punkish music, Punk being the predecesor of both Goth and Emo..

Basically emo is Punk on estrogen

I believe "emo"(emotional?) is a genre of music that eventually evolved into a stereotype. Not all emos cut themselves, just like not all models are anorexic or bulimic.

I actually thought emo was the term used to describe metrosexual (yes that's a word) people who aren't quite crossdressers fully. Another way to look at it is it's the nouveau goth. Cutting yourself is a whole other genre of issues and I don't think it should be confused here.
