Oh my, this world is too messed up not to be on any form of anti-depressant. Or maybe the drugs are a way to control us into thinking the same way which leads us into being over dependant on the drug. Anyone in their right mind would not take anti-depressant for the sakes of avoiding the serious side effects. Even sleeping pills have a long grocery list of side effects, not to mention allergy pills as well. To make things seem more disturbing the simple food that we consume everyday are highly pumped with growth hormones. This is surely causing children to develope too early and the media's behaviour is not making it any easier. Of course this leads to crime which emulates obsessive and dangerous behaviour. And then they need the anti-depressant to calm and decrease such extreme manners. This is a vicious cycle that never ends.

I use antidepressants, and I think I'm quite different than the people who suggest that people who use antidepressants are all clawing their way to the top by sitting in a cubicle all day. I'm a mother, I've had depression since I was an adolescent, I've had it both in the working world and in the stay-at-home-mommy world.

I have depression, and that's why I take antidepressants. Personally, I don't think you should need any other explanation, but I'll humor your question.

Most people who don't take antidepressants and who don't have anyone close to them who need them (actually need, not some medicate-because-they're-havin... thing) don't understand what they are, what they do, or even really what depression actually is. In my particular case, depression is not defined as crying all the time or wanting to slit my wrists. It is that I am irritable, I lack interest in things that I normally would enjoy, and I have a strange feeling of the world going on around me and I'm cooperating and doing what I need to do, but I'm not actually "living". It's also accompanied by changes in sleep patterns, like having trouble actually getting to sleep, but wanting to sleep forever once I do.

I've found that taking my Zoloft helps get me up to what is "normal" for most people, rather than being stuck in that rut. Yes, I realize it's normal to have days where you're tired, you're irritable, etc. But it's not normal for you to be like that constantly.

Why should I NOT take something to alleviate what has been referred to as my illness by myself and my doctor? If my illness were diabetes or heart disease or asthma or one of any number of "real" illnesses, you would not say "Why do you take insulin?" or "Whey do you use an inhaler?"

I suffer because of depression as much as many people suffer from those "real" illnesses. Who are you to decide whether my suffering is valid? Why should I not make use of any resource that is legal, ethical and available to ease suffering?

I don't know why "Americans use so many antidepressants." I just know that that's why I use an antidepressant.

That's quite the generalization. I'm sure just as many people in other countries use antidepressants too.

they don't...some use an antidepressant drug because they are depressed and other ways have failed them.

why do some people generalize and place all Americans in the same category? Drives me crazy

Because we stress over being successful. It plays hard on the mind and body. Tv and movies make us feel defective by their messages of perfection, which very few can measure up too. There's many reasons, just think on it awhile.

we are taught to believe that working in cubicles for money hungry c.e.o.'s is the key to success and happiness. it really isn't, so many Americans are unhappy and self-medicate to stop the depression that comes from the way our society is structured :(
