My goodness! Take a look at an author named Octavia E. Butler. She is one on the greatest si-fi/fantasy authors ever. African American or otherwise!
She won both Hugo and Nebula awards. In 1995, she became the first science fiction/fantasy writer to receive MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Grant.

i once read a book about african fariy tales,
like 1 was about a tricky spide who tricked every one.

Try Nalo Hopkinson, though she's not American, but her books deal with Caribbean magic.... you might enjoy the difference.
