I enjoy running, but wake up in the middle of night with foot cramps. I am wearing a new pair of Nike running shoes. Everyone keeps telling me I need to be fitted and spend the money on "good" running shoes made for me (I have flat feet) and that a 19 year old kid working at Academny or Foot Locker isn't going to be able to help me. Where do I get this fitting and recommendation?

i have very flat feet too and i enjoy running.
i wear nikes or Asics...i like Asics the best and they are really comfortable.
if those don't work then i suggestest finding Dr. Scholls...i've seen them at wal-mart before

Try a sporting goods store, such as Dick's. The people there may know what they are talking about, depending on the store you go to. A place that they have near where I live called Road Runner Sports is great. It depends where you live - check your local phone book for running shoe stores. Also, another place to go is the New Balance store. They are all over the nation and will definitely fit you and help you find the right shoe for your foot type. (Believe it or not, it is a bit of a science to find the right shoe!) Whoever told you not to go to Foot Locker or Foot Action is right. They probably don't know much about long, frequent running like it sounds like you're doing.

Also, check out the Shoe Lab Shoe Finder at Runner's World (http://runnersworld.com/cda/shoelabshoefinder/0,7154,s6-240-325-329-0-0-0-0-0,00.html). This may give you a good idea of what to look for when you go out to shop. My advice is to steer away from Nike or Adidas, unless you find a pair that is great for cross-training. Lean more towards brands such as Saucony (my personal favorite), New Balance, or Asics - all of these are awesome for any type of runner. Hope this helps!
