The Almighty. He taught. We blew him off and set the stage for all future professor/student relationships for all eternity.

The first professors (they called them masters of arts in those days) read the logical works of Aristotle in the 1000's and traveled around teaching students. The logic of Aristotle was only available in Spain in those days, because the Arabs, who had invaded Spain in 711, brought their texts with them. Europeans traveled to Spain, translated Aristotle into Latin, and brought their translations north. In the 1000's, there were only church parish and cathedral schools. In the very early 1100's, some historians have thought that there was a school where students could come to learn at the cathedral of Chartres. Others dispute this. At any rate, in the early 1100's there was a university at Paris. The university consisted of schools at Notre Dame cathedral, the church of St. Genvieve (where Peter Abelard taught), and other churches. The university came into being as a corporation that set rules about who was a professor, who was allowed to teach, what were the students supposed to learn, and who was to be certified as a master of arts. At the University of Bologna in Italy, things were the other way around. The leading corporation there was that of the students. They were paying the teachers-professors, and they wanted their money's worth, so they set rules for the masters (professors) to follow. If a professor married, he was to get off one day for his honeymoon. Lectures should start no earlier than 6am in summer and 7am in winter, because students had to buy candles to see so early.
