You want to know how it is to smoke? I personally do not smoke but, try this. Put a coffee straw in your mouth and try breathing through that (and only that... not using your nose) for a few minutes.

The taste of cigarette smoke is quite bitter, and a bit metallic. However, if you become a smoker you soon get over it and basically you don't taste it at all after a certain point.
If you've never smoked before, smoking can have one of two effects
1) A pleasant buzz, and a slightly dizzy but funny feeling (the "right" amount)
2) Make you sick to your stomach (too much)
It will also absolutely definately have the effect of making you cough, the first few times you inhale. That's not at all pleasant.
After a relatively short time you get used to smoking, and as a you seldom feel either of the effects.
Once you're addicted, you get urges to smoke. A slightly 'thick' feeling in your lungs and throat, and maybe some slight tingling of the extremities are all you feel when you smoke at that point.
The urge itself is not really a "feeling" that can be described... it's just... a craving. I can only explain it by analogy - it's a hot summer day, and you feel like you want an ice cream. It's kinda like that... and seeing other people having an ice cream only makes it worse.
But if you get an urge and you don't smoke despite the urge (and you're addicted), you start feeling grumpy, a little depressed, your thinking becomes just a bit slower, you get frustrated a lot easier. That's what quitting smoking starts out feeling like. Over the course of a few days you just feel worse; angry, more depressed, lethargic, you have trouble sleeping, and all you can really concentrate on is that thought in your brain that keeps screaming at you to smoke... and you cough a lot as your lungs start trying to heal the damage now that they finally have a break. After a relatively short time, those feelings gradually start fading away, but for someone going through the withdrawls, every minute is like an eternity. It's not pleasant at all.
The bottom line is, starting smoking is tough (the coughing, and the queazyness you feel), then it feels really good for a very short period until you're addicted, then it doesn't feel like anything at all - you just smoke to avoid feeling bad, for the most part - and quitting smoking is a lot harder than starting was.

I smoke. Don't like it but there it is. The worse time for me is when I'm driving or when I see someone else light up. It's a compulsion. You can't stop thinking about it until you light up yourself. I'm fine without a cigarette as long as I have something to do or I'm somewhere I can't smoke. I smoke a lot when I'm on the computer. It's like I need something to do with my hands. I either smoke, bite my nails, or eat.
Open mouth kiss a smoker and you can taste it for yourself.

Smoking was great but I don't know why. If you don't smoke enough you feel like crap if you smoke to much you feel like crap. I never felt like I was addicted to the nicotine I felt I was addicted to the hand to mouth action. I quit 3 weeks ago. It was pretty easy but I had tried to quit previously and never could this last time though I had no expectations and I think that was the key

It's hard for your dad to stop because the tobacco companies put chemicals in the cigarettes that make it hard to stop.
Also, there is the "habitual" factor of smoking...they have to have something to do with their hands...and triggers, such as smoking after eating, smoking when they first get up, have been there a LONG time, so it is SUCH a hard habit to break.

Very addictive and can help people releave their stress. The bad news is is is hell to quit and a cigarette contains many poisons and over 4,000 toxins. I am nearly at 3 months quit. Do yourself a favour and never start.

apparently, nicotine can be physically addictive to some. for most it is only psychologically addictive. smoking entertains each of the five senses at once. therein lies its appeal.
