As some one who has over 20 years martial arts experience I can tell you honestly that the best thing to do to protect yourself is to use simple plain common sence.

Most crimials are cowards and dont want a confrontation. they well only pick on those that appear weak or look like they wont give them a fight. only the most determined/crazy/drugged out types well attack a strong person.

so simply put apply common sence, and youll be fine. here are some simple tips that should help.

1: first and formemost "BE AWARE!!"

I cant emphasize this one enough. too many people never see the attack coming because their too busy talking on the cell, digging for there keys, juggling 4 bags of groceries etc. you must pay attention to your surroundings.

do this by walking calmly to your destination. keep your head on a swivel, slowly look from left to right, note details around you. A crook is less likely to attack you if he thinks youll see him coming. also make sure to scan the back seat of your car. to besure that no one is hiding there.

2: apply common sence

Again there is an old military acronym. K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) this means dont over complicate relatively simple tasks. when you walk to your car have your keys in your hand. have the main key/ ignition key held firmly between your thumb and forefinger. this well enable you to use it as soon as you arrive at your car. and if neccesary you can use it as a weapon. make sure that you finish any phone conversations before you leave for your car, or ask the person t o hold on untill you are safe inside your car. this well enable you to remain aware of the situation.

3: buddy system

Do not be afraid to ask someone "YOU TRUST" to walk with you to your car. many stores/ malls etc are now making use of security guards or have personel that well walk you to your vehicle. if you see something that seems not right do not " I repeat DO NOT" be afraid to ask for help. A little embarrasment about being wrong is an ok substitute for a lot of pain and being a victim.

4: REMAIN AWARE

Notice a pattern here. remaining awareness of your self and your situation is the most important thing you can do. trust your instincts, if something seems wrong or off. then it just might be. feeling can be soothed over later with an apology. pain and injuries suffered during a robbery can be alot more permanent.

5: Avoid the situation

One sure way not to get hurt is to not get into the situation in the first place. if your walking down a dark alleyway do you really expect it to be a safe place? if your car runs out of gas on the side of the road because you didnt fill up when you had thge chance is it the cars fault? dont make yourself vulnerable by failing to apply common sence and avoid bad situations whenever possible.

6: make yourself visible.

All but the most hardened or crazed crooks dont like attention being drawn to themselves. if your introuble make noise. yell fire, screma asloud as possible say "NO!!" as loud and as repatedly as possible. do whatever it takes to draw attention to yourself. an assailant is more likely to run away then to stick around if he thinks he can get an easier target elsewhere.

You simply need to be careful thats all. none can predict what wel happen next in life. but by applying common sence you can protect yourself against most threats. be very careful if you decide to research self defence courses and the like. many of them are simply out to make money and may even provide you with a false sence of security or similar.

If you feel like you would like to learn more I suggest that you look up self defence courses in your local area. look for those that practice more then just fighting techniques. look for the ones that enable you to remain aware, and confident ina situation.

self defence is not simply about being able to fight. its about being able to stay alive. A reputable course well teach you how to remain aware and safe and THEN theyll teach you how to fight.

These are by no means the only rules because simply put every situation is different. but the above represent simple common sence rules taught by most law enforement personel.

So stay aware and be safe.

I would go out and buy a weapon to protect myself. Let people know you have one. They'll think twice about bothering you.
