my labor was induced on my original due date and a few hours later i gave birth to a baby boy, perfect and healthy in everyway, but he only weighed 6 lbs, 0.5 oz. and he was 20 inches long. is this an alright birthweight or is it a possibility that he was premature? his pedi didn't act very concerned about the weight & his lungs were perfect, but as a first-time mom, i am over-analyzing everything and need opinions lol.

The Dr. would have been able to tell if he was a preemie. It may be that he is just small genetically. I am small too ( 5'3" and 112 pounds) but my babies were always big. ( 6lbs 3 oz, 8 lbs 7 oz and 8 lbs 15 oz) My first was 6lbs 3 oz, but was 5 weeks early. They were sure of that, as he had respiratory distress syndrome due to undeveloped lungs, but all the people in NICU were suprised at his size for being so early. The preemie diapers in NICU were too small and they had to go to regular nursery for diapers for him. he he I also had GD, I think that maybe makes a diff.
There are soo many variables to weight. I don't think your baby was early. I think it is just him. All babies and children are different, as are all of us adults. As long as he is healthy, don't worry about it.

My friend had 3 babies all full term, and the diggest only weighed 6lbs 8oz and was only 19 inches. Her smallest was 5lbs 2oz and 16inches. They were all perfectly fine just small. The average baby is 7 1/2lbs and 19 inches, so that means there are a lot of babies smaller and a lot bigger. I am sure your baby is fine, if the doctor is not worried. Just think he will be able to wear the newborn clothes longer. Good Luck and Congratulations.

Only your doctor can really tell, the size is normal and in proportion. Some women have 8 pound babies that are premature. (They tell by development) It sounds like your baby is absolutely normal and the Dr. would have told you if something was wrong. Enjoy your child.
