I am with you. If people can't speak our language, they should not be here.. I was majoring in social work and had to have 4 sem. of language (I couldn't do Spanish in high school)..therefore I had to change my major (to something a LOT harder).. in the time that we r learning a language, we could have at least 2 more sem of classes related to our degree.. That's just another reason to get more money from us for no reason...

There are reasons for studying foreign languages other than merely being able to speak the given language. You learn things about English that you'd never learn without studying a foreign language.
Also, you learn a lot about other cultures when you study a language.
Stop thinking of it as learning some basic practical skill and think of it more in terms of general enrichment.
BTW, 4 years is a *lot* unless you're majoring in it. Are you sure you don't mean 4 semesters?

No offense man, but that is exactly the mentality that causes other countries to hate Americans. Learning another language just makes you a better person, allows you to communicate better with people that speak that language, and in general it is seen as a valuable skill for any job. Just imagine, people in Europe speak 2-4 languages at least, they know how important it is to have that knowledge and use it elsewhere…especially when they travel. I hope you realize how important it is to learn another language besides English. Good luck.

Depends on your program. Sounds like you're in Liberal Arts somewhere.
Also ask why you have to take the required gym classes, english classes, math, etc. too... perhaps to make you a more rounded individual so you can appreciate other cultures and historical background of another language besides english.

Are you a Texan?
There are many non-english speaking people in America. You must know how to communicate with them in some jobs. Many jobs pay you extra for being bilingual.

That's a good question. Why is it that they forced me to take countless classes in science, history and mathematics when I had planned on being an ignorant fxck for the rest of my life? I should demand my tuition back...

gen eds baby.. we all hate em. You may want to consider not going to a liberal arts school if your choice of major permits it(or has other options) in order to avoid most of them.. thats what i am doing
