It *seems* pure speculation as to what "he" believed...we can't even prove beyond a reasonable doubt who wrote all "his" plays...but at very least religion, or holy books at any rate, gave "him" much material for plot line analogy and quotation (as must be true of all authors in any ongoing culture...)

He was extremely cautious to expose his convictions. Europe was slaughtering each other, Catholic Queen(Bloody) Mary was replaced by Protestant Queen Elizabeth. England was attacked by Spanish Armada for Catholicism in 1588.

Wily Willy was well aware of the Royal hangman's noose which changed with every monarch.

So, he may have been cynical about the nobility of royalty and their exploitation of religion for their own ambition.

In his earlier works he was actually a sadist, creating even more sinister plots and characters. Luckily the british government destroyed all documentation of these works to lead on that he only produced plays of Catholic backround. These secret little known works include: Thy Mother Whore and Death of You.
