for one thing, the harmony is always going to be different notes than the melody. If you are singing the main vocal lines, you have to stop there. One easy way is to go higher or lower than the main vocal. If you have a high voice, try to sing higher than the main vocal. If you have a low voice, try to sing lower than the main vocal. If nothing else, just singing the same thing an octave higher or lower will sound good.
But, true harmony stays in the same range, just uses different notes. One thing I like to do is what I call splitting. Start off singing the same note as the main vocal. When they go up, you go down. Or, if they go down, make your line go up.
Another thing you can do is listen to lots of music where they harmonize. The Beatles were the masters at this. If you can learn to sing both parts to one of thier songs, you will have a better understanding of how harmony is supposed to work.

I would start off by listening to and learning from the great harmony acts. The Everly Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Eagles, CSN all had great harmonies. I learned how to sing harmony by listening to and dissecting the harmony clusters in their recordings. Being able to play an accompanying instrument (guitar or piano) will make being able to "hear" harmony a little bit easier.

For some people singing harmony is a talent but it is also something you can work on.
You can begin by playing notes on the piano for examle A and then try to sing a semitone higher - A#. When you have worked on the semitone interval continue by a tone, a major 3rd etc. Eventually you will be able to harmonise a song without thinking much about it.

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://bitly.im/aL2LE
Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.
Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.
