Fan blades are like propellers, they are designed to cause air to flow in a specific direction. If they are put on backwards they will tend to circulate air in the opposite direction. In a motor car this will result in hot air from under the hood flowing towards the radiator affecting cooling process. Look closely at the blades you will notice the front and rear edges of the blades are shaped different. I hope you realize that its not only by changing direction of rotation you can change air flow but also by the angle and shape of blades. My co-worker put the fan backwards on a forklift, the engine kept overheating until he figured out his mistake.

It was a comen problem on older car for people who where not in the auto industry. By the late sixties they made the blades of the fan so they would only go on one way. Although I have heard of people that still managed to put the fan on backwards. Now days the cars have an electric fan and you can only put in place the way it is spouse to be. If you have a car the best thing you can do is get a re pare manual (found at the auto parts store or you local dealer) that will give you good information on how your car works. You can also check out the local library in the reference area. There has been a lot of changes in the auto industry since I was very young. I still like the older cars as I can still do most of the repairs. I like the safety of a new car so I have added some to my old car...Hope this helps...

SURE IT WOULD WORK BUT VERY POORLY.THE FAN ONLY AIDS THE COOLING UNTIL YOU REACH ABOUT 35 MPH.AND NO IT WOULDN'T WORK RIGHT,THE FAN PULLS AIR THROUGH THE RADIATOR AND OVER THE ENGINE.BACKWORDS IT WILL PULL VERY LITTLE AIR OVER THE ENGINE AND THROUGH TH RADIATOR UNTIL THE OUTSIDE AIR PUSHED IT BACK AND WOULD CRATE A SO CALLED AIR DAM.I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH COOLING THAT WOULD ACTUALLY DO BUT IT ISN'T WORTH TRYING IN MY OPINION.IF IT'S A METAL FAN JUST UNDO THE 4 BOLTS AND PUT IT BACK ON THE RIGHT WAY.IF IT'S ELECTRIC THEN JUST REVERSE THE WIRES LEADING TO IT.

In my short and evil life, I've arrived at the conclusion that things work best when done as intended by the designer.

I always tell my wife, "If you follow the recipe, it always comes out right".

I think unless your fan belt is going backwards, it isn't going to matter. No matter which way you face the blades, they should look the same.
