Should the State you live in have the right to control who is allowed to be married by a Pastor, Preacher, or Priest "etc' .
In our State in order to be married by a Pastor, or even a Judge for that matter, you must first recieve license , a blood test,
The list goes on . All of this generates monies which go to the State.
In order to be reconized as married for IRS, Tax purposes etc.
Why should or should not this be allowed to continue.
Mature answers please.

The state controls marriage for money reasons, as well as ensuring the safety of those who are marrying. It makes sure that both spouses-to-be are aware of the others past spouses. It makes sure that the stb are not minors. It makes sure the stb are not carrying deadly diseases. It makes sure the stb are not already married.
No one forces you to get married. You do not have to get married in this day and age. If you are opposed to the states role in marriage, do not participate. Seems pretty simple.

If you want to get "married" get "married" and have what ever kooky ceremony you want to whom ever or what ever you want. Think about it for a second, there is nothing stopping two gay people from buying each other rings having a ceremony and calling themselves "married" it is just not recognized by the government. If you want all the benefits from the government for actually being married then of course they get to set the rules over how and who gets to marry. Seriously, if there are no rules what's to stop me as a single male from claiming I'm marring my dog so I can get tax benefits. So obviously even you would agree there has to be SOME rules, and since there has to be SOME rules then obviously SOMEONE has to set those rules and that SOMEONE would have to be the government. What you are really saying is that you don't like the rules in place. Which is fine, vote for candidates that support changing those rules but don't say there shouldn't be any or that the state doesn't have the right to set them because that's just plain silly.

In Michigan, it used to be the same and you also had to go to counseling for STD's, they have since changed the entire process. I think because so many couples started to leave and go to another state just to get married. You should check out the marriage process in the state nearest to you, and if it's worth it, go there and tie the knot.
The states have a vicious cycle of money going... and it usually is someone elses. This really should not be allowed to continue, It is terrible to charge people for making a vow to another. What happened to "family values"?... I thought that was supposed to be encouraged, rather than just "shacking up".

The reason the State controls marriage, is because of taxes. If taxes were not an issue, and the government lost that revenue source (they tax single people more), then there would be no reason to govern marriage. Another reason to support Fair Tax, thank you. Once the tax issue is over and done with gays can get married, without much issue.

I do think the state needs to keep track of who is married and to whom, but purely for tax reasons. I do not think they should be allowed to dictate who can marry whom. Marriage is basically a religious institution and there is supposed to be a seperation of church and state, which there can't be when laws based on religious ideals dictate who can marry.

my opinion is that marriage relates to rights over having children and there needs to be some form of checks and balances to protect kids ...
