It is narrated by a man who lives in a society where a chip is planted in everyone's brain at birth. It is as powerful as a human brain and parallels his life experience until he reaches the age where the natural brain would start to deteriorate. At that point an operation is performed in which the brain is removed and the individual lives on in the chip. In this way individuals achieve virtual immortality at their best stage of brain function.
The narrator is approaching the time of the operation and is fearful of dying. That is what he assumes will happen when his brain is removed. He is forced to have the operation against his objections. Afterwards he wakes up and, in doing so, realizes that he is the chip.

Not sure about that, but if you enjoyed the story, try watching Final Cut with Robin Williams.

Sounds very interesting. I've never read it, but I definitely would like to find out the title as well.
