I have lived in this house for almost 3 years now and I am noticing the water getting worse as time goes by. My clothes are dingy looking from the iron/rust in my water. And if I have water in like my bath tub and it sits for awhile it turns orange color. Plus my hair is starting to turn like a red/orange color. We have a water softner and we use the big bags of salt, but we have hard well water. What do we need to do???? And does anyone know how to get my hair back to its original color???????????? HELP!!

If it's just metals in your water, adding a peroxide to your wash will help get the stains out. However, I suggest you take a sample down to the local University Cooperative Extension and ask them to make sure you don't have anything hazardous in your water. Heavy metals are poisonous if they are too concentrated.

After the water softener has cycled, run the cold water for two minutes and take a sample. Sample bottles are usually free from Sears. Take the sample to Sears and let them run a test on it. The test should tell you how hard the water is and what the hardness is composed of. It sounds like you have a form of iron. There are special filters to remove iron but they don't work all that well and are expensive.

Also, use a salt that removes iron deposits from the softner, this will cost a little more but may help. It is also possible that the setting (how much salt is used per cycle may be to low or that you need to cycle more often because you are using all the soft water up before the system recharges.)

To get your whites white again, get "Iron Out". This is a product you add to the laundry. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY, if you add bleach to this, it produces a toxic gas. This product does work fairly well. Price wise the best place I have found for this product is Sam's Club.
The same company makes a weaker product I believe it is called "yellow out" Costs a little less as well.

Your hair; try using lemon juice as a rinse after washing your hair....just get the big bottle of "real lemon" and dump it on and rinse your hair, give it a minute or to to soak in and then a final rinse with clean water....if your blond this will really brighten your hair back up.

Sounds like you have most of the water problem taken care of. How about your hot water tank. You have been there 3 years but how long has the tank been there. It could need a real flushing, which should be done at least once a year. Will clear all the crap out. This will help you a lot. You will be disgusted when you see the filth come out of that tank. But at the same time you will feel a whole lot better. Is it a rental tank? Have em service it. Good Luck!

your water table is changing and there isn't much you can do except try to drill another hole with cleaner water! because of the droughts then heavy rains the under ground water table is fluctuating,, i have a dual filter system and pvc pipes but my water is still yellowish because of the fine clay particles flosting around. luckily my other well is still clean! they are only 60 feet apart so you can see how just a little distance matter!! you may have a lot of sediment in your tank,, so have it cleaned out,, if your pipes are all pvc theres no problem there,, oh,, maybe some setiment in your hot water heater too so flush it!!

It sounds like you may need to have some pipes replaced or put a filter at the main waterline that filters for the entire house. If it is a problem with the pipe though a filter won't work.

Your water may have a high iron content.

Talk to a Plumbing place, or something, that needs to be checked out.

As for your water, call a plumber. As for your hair you should die it back to it's original color and as you hair grows it will look normal . Not like dieing your hair blonde and having browwn roots.
