No it isn't true, but wouldn't be cool if it was.
But, there are a few reasons why you would hear ringing in your ears.

If your ears ring, someone is talking bad about you. Appalachian superstition (http://www.ferrum.edu/applit/studyg/Super_SW.htm)
Ringing Ears-You will hear some news. Greek superstition (http://www.greekshops.com/newsletters_archive/may_2004/)
The ringing symbolizes church bells, portends the death of a friend. English superstition. Also an Opportunity for Divination - If you get a ringing in your ears, ask someone for a number. The letter of the alphabet that corresponds to that number is the letter that your spouse's name will begin with. I heard it means somebody is talking about you. And further, if you ask somebody to give you a number between 1 and 26 off the top of their head, that letter of the alphabet is the initial letter of the name of the one who's doing the talking.

When I experienced the death bell, it wasn't a constant ringing in the ear, but a single ring as if someone had a crystal bell beside my head and it was struck. This would repeat every 20 seconds until 3 rings were heard. Several hours would pass and I'd hear it all over again. This happened several times throughout the day. I've heard of death bells before but didn't really believe in it until it happened to me. That night will driving down the road I heard it for the last time, two days later my uncle had passed away. I'd say if you never experienced it yourself, you will probably not believe in it. I know I didn't, but I do now.
