Sometimes my Russian Tortoise makes a noise that sounds like a sneeze, then he pulls his head into his shell all the way. I've only heard it twice. He is not sick and does not have any kind of runny nose, which people have told me to check for.

What is this noise and why does he make it?

He may have a slight upper respiratory infection, or gotten some food or grit stuck in his nose. If it was an isolated event, I wouldn't worry about it. But if it's recurrent, get him to a vet. (We had a box turtle with a URI once, and had to give him antibiotics with a tiny syringe.)

Our Russian Tortoise also made "clicking noises" when it was excited. Great pets, by the way.

It is true as another post mentioned that the grunting helps exert more force however on the womans side this has become an excuse for extremely loud grunting in order to try to throw off your opponent. most players on both sides gruint but it's not loud enough to really get picked up by the mic's for many of them. Any type of rule trying to enforce limits on the noise level would be hard to enforce and the grunting probably becomes so ingrained that It would actually affectthe games of players like Sharapova if they had to tone it down at this point. I think that In general it is starting to be looked down upon and as new players filter in who didnt learn to grunt the extreme cases will stop showing up because coaches will no longer advise it.

This is a sneeze. It might be the beginnings of a cold, so watch your temps and humidity.

It also might be because of dustiness in the tank. If using a dust-producing substrate you may want to change it.
