I was in the USAF for 10 years and was openly gay the last 6 years. I had a great time and knew dozens and dozens of other gays serving their country. I did not bother anyone and no on bothered me. I respected my comrades in arms and never once brought my sexuality up in an inappropriate way. Who I went to bed with was not as important as how well I did my job.

It depends on who's in the person's chain of command. Some first sergeants have been known to put a clamp on people trying to turn in gays/lesbians, commanders have been known to overlook gays/lesbians on duty, and THEN you have your homophobic idiots who will try like hell to turn you in, or destroy your life.
According to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, it's against the "law" and you can be persecuted, prosecuted and made really damned miserable. The "don't ask, don't tell" rule is a bunch of crap because the military can fiddle with anything and turn things into witch hunts whenever and however they want.
You like your career and you know your chain of command is homophobic, you shut your mouth and suck it up, or you flaunt it and take your chances.

There's nothing to it. Like someone said it depends on the people who surround you( the one's you work w/ daily) I wouldn't come out and announce it over a bull horn but some people know and they are ok with it. Lets just say work stays at work and what you do on your own time is your business and whatever you do at work that pertains to your gay lifestyle keep it hidden in private unless it is cool with the people you know.

I was in the military.
Just do not look around when you are in the shower, and do not say anything when other people (some of whom are disguised gays) comment on women's legs or breasts.
