You got a few quick fix answers and just one answer that you should follw to sort the problem for good just do THE OPPOSITE of what he said LOL..
The good way is to [in Windows Explorer click on Tools on the top menu then click on Folder Options. Click on the View tab and scroll down until you see an option that says "Hide extensions for known file types". CHECK that box and then click on the button that says "Apply to all folders".]
The quick fix is when renaming the files you should LOOK at the name of the file and REALIZE that the name is showing also the extension of the file, not only the name.
So when you see " myphoto.jpg" and you want to rename it to "newname" you should really type "newname.jpg" unless you change only the name bit and leave ALONE the part of the name that comes after the dot. (also called extension) There are many extension types, if you LOOK properly you will see that your PC is set to SHOW all extensions for all files, which I -repeat- are the part of the name that comes after the dot.
If/when you follow the instructions in square brackets above you will realize that your PC will now HIDE the extension names, this is good for beginners who will otherwise run into your problem, not so good for people who constantly mess about with file extensions.

This is a confusing problem, it sounds like your pc can't recognise jaypegs! It seems to be turning them into data files instead of recognising them.
The first thing to check is that your pc can recognise the jaypeg format. Open your My Pictures folder and click on Tools - Options. Click on the tab in the dialogue box and check that jaypeg is on the list of recognised file types.
If its not there you have to add it. You can do that by clicking the New button; but I've never done this so can't talk you through it! It should be straightforwards.
The second thing to check is right click on a jaypeg and click Properties - Open With and select the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Tick the box that applies this action to all files of this type. From now on when you double click on a jaypeg it should show in the viewer.
And finally, make sure your pc is set to show file extensions. Open your 'my docs' folder and click Tools - Folder Options and then the View tab.
Make sure the box that says 'hide file extensions for known file types is unticked. Click Apply then OK to save your changes. It can cause problems if you try to change the file extension just by typing in a different one.

Hi Joe,
It sounds as if you are using Windows. By default, Windows Explorer hides file extensions so you probably weren't seeing the .jpg extension on your picture names when you renamed them but it was there. Go back and rename your pictures by putting .jpg on the end of them. You will get that same warning but it is OK. Your pictures will now show up as images.
To show file extensions from now on, in Windows Explorer click on Tools on the top menu then click on Folder Options. Click on the View tab and scroll down until you see an option that says "Hide extensions for known file types". Uncheck that box and then click on the button that says "Apply to all folders".

I am a little confused as a Jpeg is a file and a file can be a jpeg
If you cant see the little thumbnails it probably means that the programme that originally opened the pics isn't on your new PC.
Try right clicking and selecting open with
open with whatever prog you normally use and check the box to make this the default action.
if this works select all the pics and repeat the process.
sorry if that doesn't help but i couldn't quite understand what you meant
always call your jpegs something.jpeg as xp can get confused easily

The warning message about the file extension becoming unusable is because all your other photos are in a file e.g. for photos it is nameoffile.jpg.
So click on rename and then type in the name you want and follow it by .jpg
