I am a strong, fit, 12-year-old girl who loves horses but does not have the money to take lessons. I have been okay with this for the past several years but lately have been wanting a job at a horse stable. I am willing to do the "dirty work" and needn't be paid or even given "riding time" or time in the saddle. My question is, how do I go about looking for a job? Do I sound all right? (I have had past experience riding horses, only Western, and have baby-sat too!)

Like I said on my other post to you- See if you can exchange stall mucking for riding lessons. For a 12yr old, you sound like you have more experience than most.
All you need to do is go to a local tack store and look for business cards set out and call them. You can also find out when local shows or clinics are- ask them. Another easy way is to just google " your area and horse stable" a lot of ones should pop up. Phonebooks are another option.
Explain your situation to the stable owner- that you want to take some riding lessons and you love horses and want to be around them more. If you want to make it really appealing, find out how much riding lessons are, and figure it out that you will work $3 an hour or something like that. Ex- Lessons are $30, - you work 10 hrs for one lesson. Or ask them what they think what would be a good hourly/ day trade- you may get a better deal. Since you have ridden in the past and therefore have some experience, I wouldn't just say "let me work there for free", I would try to trade some lessons for it.
I wouldn't say your age unless they ask- and if you can, visit the stable so you can show them that you are strong enough to actually help out.

Good luck with your search!

If I were you, I'd contact local riding stables, either found online, through a friend, or in your Yellow Pages. Call a couple and explain that you're looking to get in volunteer hours around horses so that hopefully you can work with them some day. If they sound at all interested in letting you help them out, see if you can go to the barn and get an "interview" of some sorts. If you haven't told them already, make sure they know all the experience you have with horses (but DON'T over-exaggerate).

If they still aren't sure, repeat with another stable :)

Again, good luck!

You can't legally get a job until you're 16, but I knew an eleven year-old who worked for my riding instructor. Call a local stable owner or instructor and ask if they need any help from an experienced horse owner. You could also post a flyer for a horse show groomer at a local show ground and list a county that your parents will be willing to drive you to and you can groom a horse at a show and/or barn where you can wash the horse. Or of there is someone at your barn who is maybe pregnant or sick and can't ride or care for their horse or is out of town you can horse-sit for them and ride and care for their horse, just be sure that you know that the horse is safe to ride. Good luck! :D
