Take it at Face Value means take something for what it is worth.

Hmm...I never thought about "Only the good die young" I'm not quite sure about that one.

Take it at face value means to accept what someone says, rather than searching for "deeper" meaning that may or may not be there.

Only the good die young (a great song!) means that eventually everyone will do "bad" things so you might as well start now. In this case, it is his way of trying to talk Virginia into having sex... "sooner or later it comes down to fate, I might as well be the one". Why bother waiting?

As you can imagine, not a message that many parents and/or clergy really supported.

Take it at face value goes back to when gold coins would weigh the amount they were printed. A dollar coin would be a dollar's worth of gold so you take things at face value means almost like as far as you know it's correct. Only the good die young because if you are good you haven't really lived.

"Take it at face value" kind of means "you get what you see". Don't expect anything else other than what is plainly in front of you.

"Only the good die young" is kind of Billy Joel's way of saying that alot of great people have been taken from this Earth too soon.

Take it at face value:

Do not try to read in the other party's motives, just respond to what they have done overtly. For example, if you receive jogging shoes from your mother, say thank you I will use them, rather than "is this her way of telling me I need to work out more?"

Only the good die young is a slogan that mocks the concept of karma. It's kind of like murphy's law. If you try to be good in order for good things to come back to you, it will backfire. (ie: somoene who tries to be good will experience an untimely demise or some other bad fortune. It is similar to "no good deed goes unpunished".) In the song he's using this logic to seduce a girl who does not want to party and or have sex.

1. See the situation for what it is rather than analyzing.

2. God calls the good home first.

"Take it at face value," to me, means to take something for what it is and not to look too deep into it.

Looks mean everything in today's world, maybe in yesterday's world, too.
