It is not enough just to set up a web site, that is relatively easy, the art is in getting it listed on the first page at Google, Yahoo etc. Without a good listing then no one will find you.
I went online with my holiday rental business about 4 years ago now and chose SiteBuildit! to build my site with as they give you loads of help and advice as to how to achieve that elusive but so important good listing.
Have a look at their web site here:-

and if you are interested you can read about my experiences of going online here:-

You can create a website by using a Google Page Creator. It is free and webhosting also free. You only need a google account. You do not need to know HTML coding. http://pages.google.com/-/about.html

Or you could built your website by using Yahoo Small Business, which is not free but not very expensive either.

Also quite simple with no need to know the html.

Or you could buy a programme Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 for building a professional website and then additionally buy a webhosting from Yahoo or somewhere else.

The easiest way I found was Yahoo Geocities. When I was first starting out that is what I used. I have since gone beyond and purchased my own domain name and hosting account with IPowerhttp://partners.ipower.com/z/12/CD5651/. When I used Geocities, I downloaded a free template onto my hard drive and from there made changes in Geocities. It is a good place to start then you can advertise it on Geocities and free advertising sites on the web

Get Mandriva Linux on your machine and replace windoze. Loaded this already has a website. Make your pages up with Quanta. You can see your website at your ip number.

Register the name you want with a US site as the UK is EXTREMELY expensive the US can take .co.uk addresses now. Get a dns forwarding from a provider for your name to your ip address. if you do not have a fixed ip address then:
1. ask you ip provider for a fixed ip
2. get a ddns router which automatically redirects the dns entries

If you want e- commerce solutions then learn php programming and edit your site yourself under quanta.
