To be completely honest, i just like to see people who are more screwed up than me on TV. Thanks to all of these great reality shows, I can watch poor people, rich people, regular people, anybody really, all making fools of themselves.
I actually hate the concept of pretty much all the shows, but the humiliation and degradation of the "contestants" makes it impossible for me to change the channel.

The main reason is its so cheap to make. Just get a few hidden cameras or some hand held camcorders and follow relatively unpaid people around. Most TV actors make millions of dollars a year, plus there's expenses for the set along with writers and directors to pay for. I only watched the final episode of the first Suvivor and then never watched any other reality TV. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Suvivor 29: The Moon advertised one day.

Reality TV is funny to me, and oftentimes, it's unbelievable what some folks will agree to do for about 15 minutes of "fame." Ratings make it so successful. What keeps me coming back for more is that interest I have to see what will happen next!

Cost, plain and simple. first the "actors" are not in "the union", second the crew and director are usually student's, present this to a network, and the cost concience big wig's will be swayed every time, this is why "better T.V." is not offered.

Because people have a tendency to feel better about themselves by watching other people make fools of themselves.

its a simple form of voyeurism - its the opportunity to take a perverse look at other people's lives.
Even though we dont like to admit it, we all take some pleasure out of watching other people do normal things.
Wierd, but addictive

I think the fact that you can really relate to the people on it, makes people like it. Also, many of the premises are interesting, if you think about it.
