I can shed some light on this subject for you. I used to work for a modeling/casting agency.

There are so many scammers in this field, the bad agency's out number the reputable agencies by about three to one.
Here are a few things to look for when choosing a talent agency to represent you:

Avoid the open casting calls you hear about on the radio, or in newspapers. Usually these are just fly-by-night companies that will just take your money, and you will never hear from them again.

Never pay an agency ANY money upfront!! A reputable agency will know it is the law that you can not ask for any payments until assignments are located for you... Even then it is not an up front fee, it is just a small percentage of your total pay per assignment... 10 to 15 percent of the pay per each assignment is customary.

Never accept an assignment that you are not totally comfortable with. Set your limits up front with your agent. For example, if you are uncomfortable wearing a bathing suit, make sure your agent does not suggest any assignment like that for you.

The best way to find a good talent agency in your area is to look in the yellow pages, and find one that actually has a perminent office in your area.

Before you decide to be listed with any agency, do a little checking into their business practices. Ask to see some portfolios of other clients they represent. Also ask them for a list of the types of work that they have located for other models. If they are a good agency, they will have no problem showing you everything you ask for. If they will not provide any of this info for you.... Just walk away!

I hope I was able to help you out a little. If you have any other questions on how to break into the modeling, or commercial acting field, feel free to e mail me jam961@yahoo.com and I would be happy to help you avoid some of the scams in that industry.
