Word of mouth, you or he could send an email to his friends, acquaintances "celebrating" his new release, just make sure that they don't think you are pressuring them to buy it. He could also throw a party. Or pay and have it advertised or post it on the web. Good luck to him.

There are books that help with this. Paul Martin has a few out there on self-promotion. It's as much, if not more work than getting the book written and published.

Is the book fiction or non-fiction? I would consider doing a review for him if its fiction. my website is below.

BUT he can set up his own web site, set up book signings at local book stores (have posters made up and make sure that his books are available) he needs to let the book buyers at the local stores know that he has book out there. Offer to speak to groups on his book, the writing process, or some other aspect that leads to his mentioning his book. Have (or make up his own) business cards, book marks and make sure that they're put in places where books are available.

Go to writing conferences (contact the coordinators and offer to appear on a panel, or speak on some writing related subject) If he can't get a spot on the lecture docket, he can still go and network with editors, publishers and other writers, pass out his information and have books available if anyone wants to buy one.

He can write an article about local writer makes it to the books shelves, and send it to the Books section of his local paper -- and to other papers in the area. Contact the columist that works this section and ask to have his book reviewed and presented in the column.

And get those first copies out to reviewers, and have the book mentioned on other web sites and linking back to his.

NOTE: it takes time to set up a web site and a lot more time to get it known... it takes work but the cost can be minimal or costly depending on the host you use.

Word of mouth, website, email mailing lists, adding his signature to the end of his email detailing his book/website. Telephone.

Unfortunately it costs $$ to really publicize a book to get it to sell and make $$.
