What kind of work do the call center employees do apart from attending and making calls while on duty?

How many calls do they attend and how many calls do they make from the office of theirs. Tell me more in detail about this I'm interested in doing a call center job in an mnc. Is it the same in very call center office.

This is very generic term.

They started out as only out going calls, they had different names, Boiler room, telemarketing,.........they were telling people about the services and products. They were developed in to some thing like E-bay.com and Amazon.com.

Then telephone companies and Internet opened up their call centres.They have two function answer the calls, batter known as help desk, then ask people to switch to their service or take their services(new customers).
