Because they have been brainwashed to think that there is something wrong with it. They are used to seeing boobs all over the TV, magazine covers, advertisements, etc. But they have a hard time accepting that they are for BABIES and not just to hold up your dress.

I am gonna be a mom soon, and I dont have a problem with it at all. My only concern with it is that the woman doesnt just whip her boob out, because who knows who is watching. A little child could see her do it, or even a pervert. But as long as the woman is covered up and polite about it, I have no problem. The baby has to eat. I totally plan on breastfeeding and if I happen to be in public when the baby gets hungry, well guess what, I am not going to make a trip home! If I prepare before I go shopping though and pump, then I will bottle feed her in public, but otherwise, the blanket is going up, and the baby is getting her milk!

because they are narrow minded. Although, I breastfeed my baby in public all the time, and have never had a problem, in fact when I do it in restaurants I find the staff very obliging.
I don't think most people even know that I am doing it to tell you the truth.
Great answer Annieohbe!! I agree, I will never feed my child in a bathroom. I feed her where ever I am when she is hungry. It is my daughter's right as a human being to eat, and I am not going to deny her, because someone has a problem with seeing a breast in the way it was naturally meant to be seen
You see more breast on a TV commercial than when I feed my daughter.

There is nothing wrong with it. However, it makes some people uncomfortable. You and I might view it as the most natural thing in the world. Other people think its gross. Really. I had a friend who saw me breast feeding at home and said..''oh ICK!'' Whats so icky about a baby eating? Just cause it comes from my body? Its not pee for goodness sakes its milk!
Anyway, I think some women tend to flaunt it because its such a natural function and dont use a shawl or something to cover it up at least out of respect for the people who have a problem with it.

I think that the woman doing the breastfeeding makes a bigger deal about it. If you want to breastfeed in public, just be as discreet as you can. No one will even notice. You're not doing anything wrong! I think women just are self-conscious to accidentally expose themselves in public. Don't worry if someone accidentally catches a glimpse. I'm breastfeeding our 4 1/2 mo old baby and have tried to breastfeed in public but find it hard. I pump my milk and bring a bottle with as much breastmilk as I pumped and add formula to it to make it a full bottle. That way I know our little man won't go hungry if I really can't pull off that public breastfeeding thing.

I just hope that people are getting more relaxed about this issue nation-wide. When done discreetly, it's no one's business but mom and baby. Those who have trouble with it have no more right to address the issue than they would if they saw a tattoo they didn't like or a kid with low-riding pants or a person with any other personal choice in manner or behavior. (Not to equate breastfeeding with low-riding pants...) The rule of thumb is probably to respect people and their choices as long as they aren't harmful to anyone. And certainly, breastfeeding is far from harmful!

I was a young mom at 18 and very insecure about myself. I still breast fed my daughter. I wasnt able to pump. so it wasnt an option. I was always discreet bubt there were times when i walked aroung the zoo with my baby attached to my breast. Im not going to stay locked in my house because I am making the smart choice for my daughter. Im pregnant again and plan on breast feeding my baby where ever i go. I dont hang my boob out for everyone to see. Most dont even notice its what im doing. my husband was at first appalled when he heard this but hes coming around. men!

I don't know. I think its ridiculous that it is even an issue. If my baby is hungry, my baby will eat. If you are offended, turn your little head somewhere else. Thats like walking through a store and saying "I don't like that poster. It's offensive to me. Take it down." Just dont effin look!!!! The ONLY time I've ever been made uncomfortable was when I was waiting tables and this BIG woman pulled out a BIG BIG breast and was NOT AT ALL discreet about it, at the dinner table. She was eating and the baby looked to be almost 3 years old. It was a little shocking, but its her right, and the baby was hungry, so I asked her if she needed more napkins and walked off.

personally, it's just my bag. people make a big deal about it because let's face it, we live in a sexually charged society that places an erotic designation on breasts. before we had children (and some during), chances are we thought of them as erotic zones. that's just how it is, and i doubt flipping out breasts in public is going to change that thought. i suppose i could use the analogy of the vagina - it too serves a dual purpose as both conduit of life, and a sexual organ. we don't have people walking around showing that, do we? at least legally, lol.
for me, the act of feeding is a private, intimate thing between mother and child. she should not be subjected to gawking and comments while eating. i know i'd be irritated, not to mention it makes for distraction.

The general public considers exposing breasts in public as a form of nudity. It's old-world thinking for sure, but there are still some people who are offended if a woman is breast feeding in public... and I just don't understand that.

Seeing a woman feeding her child the way nature intented is apparently too much for some people to handle. Maybe they're jealous of the baby. They only wanna see boobies if they can play with them themselves. Personally I'd rather see that then hear a baby crying from hunger! Plus it's not like you have to sit there and stare at the woman.
