So the TV networks can have an extra week of televising games, so they can sell more advertising, so they can make more money. The whole idea that's its to give the players a rest is bogus. Some teams play two games and have their bye week already. Then they have to go through 14 straight games. It's a ridiculous concept, it's to the benefit of the networks and the owners, not to the players.

Just because the game of football itself is really physically punishing and by giving each team a week off, the players get more time to rest and can stay at the high level of performance much easier.

It gives a team a week off to rest, and it's kind of traditional. All the beatings of a game and practices during the week, it's nice to have a week off without a game.
