Ok here is the thing, my friend and i are both pregnant, im 35 weeks and shes 36 weeks. well just recently she was telling me that her breasts were starting to leak, i tryed to get her to use the breast pad things, because thats what i use and they are really good. but she was asking me if it would be harmful or bad for her to use her breast pump. im not sure how much shes leaking, she didnt say that, but i tryed telling her that it would prolly be best to wait until the baby is born. do you guys think that i was right or would it be safe for her to use her pump? to me it just seemed like it wouldnt be a good idea. but she is pretty much insisting on useing it. thanks for the help guys :)

It isn't that it isn't safe for her to use the breast pump it is just that the milk that is the best for the baby could be taken out when she pumps. The other thing is that she could irritate her nipples so bad that when the baby comes she won't be able to feed. You did the right thing but ultimately it is her choice.

I'm 36 wks and have been leaking too. I wouldnt use the breast pump until the baby is here. For one, what would be the point. It would probably stimulate them to make the produce more and you dont want that yet.

Any kind of nipple stimulation can cause contractions. It causes your body to release oxytocin, which in turn is what causes your uterus to contract... 36 weeks is a little too early for her to do that, the baby is still considered pre-term. and the baby's lungs may not be mature yet. Leaking at this stage is totally normal, and yes, she should use breast pads if she is leaking enough to go through her clothes.
Plus the fact that what she is leaking is Colostrum, and if she is planning on breastfeeding it is full of all sorts of vitamins and nutrients her baby needs in the first few days of life. If she pupms all of that out now, her milk supply will come in and there will be no colostrum for her baby. Good luck.

Actually it is perfectly safe to use the breast pump if she wants to store some of the colostrum that she is producing. It can help to produce more colostrum, and for her body to naturally produce oxytocin that can help her go into labour. I started to use my breast pump at 36 weeks as well. It will not harm anything, nor will it deplete her supply

I would certainly wait!!!! BY pumping her breasts your friend may be putting herself at risk for preterm labor! MY midwife had told me to do that, because I was leaking badly with my third, she says that breast stimulation will release the body's natural pitocin and help to start labor! (by the way... it did work that way for me!!!) I would tell your friend to let her boobs alone!!! I would also have your friend consult her obgyn and ask just to be certain... because as you know every doctor is different. I would suggest to her that she call and ask if it is okay that she do this before she actually does and see what her doctor says! Good luck to the both of you and congrats!

I think you were right in telling her not to use it. Pumping your breast just like nipple stimulation can cause contractions and throw her into preterm labor. All you can do is tell her and if she wont listen she will find out pretty soon the consequences.

Using a breast pump while pregnant can cause pre term labor. It will release a hormone (oxytocin) into her body which can start contractions.

she should just use the pads for now, a pump will really get them going. also breast stimulation can cause labor !!

actually it wouldnt hurt other than it has a chance of putting her into labor due to nipple stimulation. I know a lot of ppl who pumped a few times before having the baby for multiple reasons. They froze their milk. I would leave her alone if i were you and worry about your own pregnancy.

She should not use a breast pump. It will just make it worse.
