In reading the answers that you have so far,im not sure what how far out you go has to do with it..On a nice day i have been 25 miles out with my flat bottom skiff..I have been 75-80 miles out with my 21 ft Key West..You just need to have a radar or at least stay with some boats that have radar so you will know if a storm heads toward you..

It depends on how far out and how safe you want to go. I have been 30 miles out in a 21' boat. There are plenty of center consoles in the 26-30' range that run out 75 miles or more as long as the weather cooperates. I have a 30 ' that I would feel safe on out that far but again would keep an eye on the weather. I would feel alot better in the mid 30' to 40' range.

The average deep sea fishing boat seems to be around 30ft to 36ft., equipped with radars to track the weather, radios for communication and distress, and a competent captain.

It depends on how far out you go. Within 20 miles around 30 ft is suitable, but farther out you need a larger boat.
