You can make a makeshift compass by doing this: when the sun is out push a stick into the ground. Mark where the shadow of the stick ends. Wait 15 mins. Now mark again where the shadow of the stick ends (the shadow will have moved). Now draw a line between the 2 points you have marked. This will make a west-east line. Draw another line exactly across this line to make a perfect cross. This 2nd line is the North-South line. You now have a near perfect compass.

The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. If this isn't much help buy a cheap compass from a hardware shop, stand in the garden and see which way the end of the garden faces

Look to the sky on a clear night. Pick out the 'Big Dipper' constellation (the one that looks like a saucepan) follow the two stars that make the end of the pan (not the handle end!) and moving in a straight line upwards, the very next star you come across is the North Star (which is true North)! it would be easier to draw you a diagram!!!!!

Meaning when you sit in your garden with your back to the house, you will be facing south. It's based on the amount of sun to your garden as people are picky like that. So basically your houses garden faces south.

you buy a compass point the compass at the desired fence point turn the dial on the compass so that the North aligns with the red arrow and then read what the compass says on the dial that you have pointed and that is what the point is eg North facing etc.

A compass... and keep in mind that if you are in the northern hemisphere you want to keep in mind that the arc of the sun will be slightly south, not directly overhead. the opposite applies to if you are in the southern hemisphere.
