FISHING!!!!!! Nothing better for a 2yr old than to get them out in a nature situation. They love to discover new things, bugs, rocks, birds , clouds,DIRT!!! Who knows you might even catch a fish or two, but that just be the icing on the cake. And believe it or not, I actually pottied trained my boys while fishing before they were 1.

Here are some ideas:

1. Set up a play date with one or two other friends and let all of the kids play together at your house or a park.

2. Buy some self-play toys like simple puzzles (the ones with the big wooden pieces that have easy-to-grab handles) and building blocks.

3. Go to an outdoor food court (like the ones in many shopping centers), get food and give your child a push toy with wheels. Many food courts have other small children whom your child can play with.

4. If you are at a nicer, sit-down restaurant, take paper and crayons. Reward your child for sitting nicely by taking him/her for a walk through the restaurant every 15 minutes.

5. Try a buffet restaurant. Kids like to pick their own food. A good choice is the Soup Plantation (also called Sweet Tomatoes). A more expensive but interesting choice would be a Japanese steakhouse in which they cook the food in front of you and usually do a performance (like turning an onion cone into a volcano).

6. If you live near an amusement park, getting season passes can be a good idea. An especially good one is Lego Land in San Diego. It has very short lines, pretty good food and lots of places where you can just sit and let your child play. It caters to kids age 2-9.

Here are some restaurant tips:

1. Give your child some running around time before the restaurant (play chasing games, hide-and-seek, etc.). This will help your child (and you) burn some calories and build an appetite.

2. Bring toys and a snack (like Cheerios) to the restaurant to occupy your child while waiting for food. Crayons and paper are a good choice. Ask your daughter to pick a doll to bring to the restaurant. She can play-feed her doll during the meal.

3. If these ideas don't work, purchase a portable DVD player (you can get them for $200 or less). Bring it with to the restaurant, and put on a movie. The Backyardigans is a popular choice with both boys and girls at this age.

In general, try to spend more time outdoors when the weather permits. This will keep both you and your child from going stir crazy.

Picnic at the park? You and your honey can sit and eat and chat under a tree by a playground, all while keeping an eye on your 2-year-old--and it's cheaper than Chuck E. Cheese.
