Unfortunately, although it is a good story, there is very little hard evidence to support any form of Cathar treasure or documents.

Certainly, the priory of Sion was founded in the 1950's by a Frenchman and the supposed historical documents which were supposed to come from the Cathars were deposited in the French national library shortly afterwards. And they made out that the Frenchman Pierre Planchard de St.Clair was descended from the Merovingian kings and through them from Jesus. At the time, everyone in France knew it was a practical joke and no one took it seriously. The whole idea behind it has no historical basis whatsoever.

And certainly Planchard was a trickster. I wish it was true because my mother was a St. Clair, it might make me Queen Elizabeth!

Rennes le Chateau is the last known place that the Cathars were centered. They believed in a more traditional form of Cristian worship, as was practiced by Paul and his followers. They were believed to be very rich and so when the Catholic Church in France ordered them destroyed as heretics there was a hope that France would get all this money. So they campaign pushed the Cathers back from much of the south of France to Renne le Chateau on a high peak in the Pyrenees Mt's. of France after a long siege the attackers got into the castle but there were few defenders and no treasure.

Enter Bereger Sauniere a French Abbey assigned to Renne le Chateau by the church it was a poor congregation but some how he made became very wealth and improved the live of the parish and the village what it was nobody knows but it was rumored to be the lost treasure. But it is also said that he was part of a secret organization called the Priory of Sion.

You can learn more by reading Holy Blood, Holy Grail or The Templar Revelation for a better telling of the tale.
