There wouldn't be an internet without the phone, and we all need that for the web so I'd say the communications industry in general as opposed to the net itself.

Potentially.
If the possibility exists, maybe the system could become sentient with enough Macs connected, and then the world will be taken over by the Big Apple....

I don't think it qualifies as large, but perhaps most complex. Unless you're considering and including the physical size of all the computers attached, then perhaps yes.

I do, however, think it qualifies as one of the most impressive things created by humans.

I would say so, there is so much cabling and so many servers that I think it is definitely the largest thing.

by miles? by wieght? physical? or intangible?
