Ok, let's blow some myths out of the water.
The entry criteria are that you are "A man free-born, without maim or defect" - this is a little anachronistic - they ain't gonna refuse you if your wear specs or stutter or have acne. (I've even seen a lodge that admitted a black labrador, ok?). You need to be 21 years of age, or 18 if you are the son of a member, past or present.
We tend not to advertise our membership to avoid the nutters who call us devil-worshippers (we're not) and assume that the police, civil-service and whatever else is run by masons, the illuminati and garden gnomes. But we are not "secret" (otherwise how have you heard of us - from the nutters?).
You are unlikely to be invited, but it's not unheard of. You might get a "veiled" invitation as follows: you go to the pub every friday night with your mate, let's call him Dave. One night a month he can't make it, he has to go somewhere. He's "inviting" you to ask questions.
If you show interest, your circle of friends will increase over time, through Dave. They will be examining you. Deciding if you would fit in with them in the same way that your employer, golf-club or pub darts team would.
If you ask how to join, you will need a proposer and a seconder. Dave would propose you and one of the other guys that you've recently met would second you. Then a formal interview.
1. Why do you want to join?
2. Can you afford the fees?
3. Is your immediate family aware and approving of your application?
(and no, I'm not going to tell you the "correct" answers to these questions).
If the guys seem a bit stand-offish it's because we don't want people who think it will give them an edge in business deals or put them on the list for an OBE or get them off speeding fines or any other ulterior motive. It is, in fact, against the rules to use the craft for "pecuniary gain".
You may have a problem based on your religion, if any. Freemasonry does not exclude anyone on religious grounds (all discussion of religion is forbidden) but certain religions ban Freemasonry - If you're a Catholic who wants to be ex-communicated, join up as soon as you can.
Google words like Grand Lodge England (or Ireland or Scotland or wherever you are)
If you don't get a personal introduction, they'll scrutinise you a little more closely, fairly obviously.
We don't admit women, but have affiliated orgs that do. If you have a wife that gets shitty about you applying, ask her if you should join the WI instead - she'll give you a strange look.

Support Rangers then get nominated by an existing member. Why? You got some speeding fines you need cleared by the tainted coppers that are also members?!?!
