The Santa Clause character was created from the real life facts about St. Nicholas. Santa has had some additions made to the story to make him more fantasy than fact, but St. Nicholas was a real person.

"Santa Claus" was anglicized (brought into English) from the Dutch "Sinter Klaus" a pet form of "St. Nicolas". St. Nicolas Day is celebrated in Holland, Belgium and parts of Germany in early December and that's when kids get presents. Immigrants to the United States and Canada merged this St. Nicolas Day tradition with the Christmas traditions that fall a few weeks later and, voila, the American Santa Claus was born. His jolly red suit, however, WAS a creation of an artist working for Coca-Cola.

St. Nicolas was from what is now Turkey. He was bishop of Myrna and known for his generosity and charitable activities. He was canonized and is considered the patron Saint of Children, Sailors and Pawn-brokers. He is buried in Bari, Italy.

His character was created by the poem 'Twas the night before christmas. The poem, which was dutch, describes Saint Nicholas as a jolly fat man. Translated from dutch to English St. Nick is Sinta Klass, which became...Santa Clause.

Thank Macy's for Santa. It's true, there was a St. Nick, and he did give presents to children. He was a Danish myth mostly though (like most saints.) However, St. Nick was hardly anything like the Mr. Clause you see at the mall.

it has to do with the actual Saint Nicholas... one legend surround him is that he heard of a poor man with three daughters... they could not marry, however, because the man could not afford dowries for them... Nicholas, feeling like he could help but being too shy and modest to openly aid them, snuck up in the middle of the night and left three pouches of gold...

add a little canonization, some story-telling, some other pagan aspects, and you get... voila... santa claus...

I know there was a real saint called Saint Nicholas but I haven't read up on him much. Either way he became associated with giving presents, and evolved (somehow) into the fat, jolly stalker that sits on your roof every Christmas Eve....
