i took an ancient literature class and this is one of the topics we discussed. i think the "tree of knowledge" is supposed to represent good & evil. before adam and eve ate the apple they were innocent. they didn't know about anything bad. once they ate the apple they realized they were naked and all that. also the apple i think represents sex. like satan tempted them into having sex but it was written that they ate an apple. i dunno this is just my opinion.

while i was with a group of friends, we got to talking about that exact thing. we were talking about perhaps the translation, the use of "the tree of knowledge" and if the fruit represented anything.
i'm not sure there is an answer. not a for sure one at least.
but something that i had argued, is that the tree of knowledge represented the knowlege of both good and evil in the world. you couldn't have one without the other. and the act of eating the apple, was man dipping into that knowledge. once he did that, he was no longer ignorant, and therefore, no longer innocent.
i'm not sure if the expulsion of adam and eve was such a bad thing. (and i could get some guff for this, i dunno). but i feel like, if god is omnipitant, and all that jazz, he would have known what he was putting in front of adam and eve, and knew they were going to take part of it.
that's almost like setting up your children for failure. and i don't really think of knowledge as being a bad thing. it's what you do with it.
and in that case, possibly eating of the apple was a bad thing.
wow, sorry, i think i contradicted myself. but anyway, that is my long winded way of saying i don't really know. but i'm sure there's more meaning there than just an apple that god said "don't eat".

It may not have been an apple. If I remember correctly, it only says he 'ate the fruit of that tree'. It could have been an orange, a peach, or anything like that.
Now, the tree itself can represent many things. Because it is the tree 'of good and evil', it symbolizes the good in the world, but also the bad that was lurking.

When Jesus spoke in parables- you know it's an example. When discussing the Garden of Eden- there were no other experiences to use as an example since they were the 1st ones. I do believe it was a fruit- not necessarily an apple, but the true problem was listening to the snake and not asking God first. Don't talk to or listen to snakes... God bless.

its the tree of knowledge and ya he did eat the fruit, its not an apple but a fruit. at least in my bible it is. Adam and Eve were naked and stuff but wern't aware of it until they ate the fruit and then they became ashamed and were banished from the garden of eden forever and it is no longer accessible to anyone.

The tree is referred to as the Tree of Knowledge but this whole story about Adam and Eve is really just about disobedience.
Bottom line....God gave us free choice. He told them what they were and weren't allowed to do but then He let them decide for themselves..........hope this helps.

I believe it represents knowledge. It means that the apple gave them the knowledge to realize that they were exposing their nakedness. This means that knowledge is evil and that people that are stupider are much more happy, because they don't question anything.
