www.e-chords.com - is $1.99 / month for a premium membership that allows you to view videos of how to play a lot of songs. It also offers standard tabs.
Learning to play the guitar is a tough, long battle. He will hit many rough stages through out his time playing. If he really wants to stick with it and play successfully, then he will have to be patient and be willing to put in a lot of time.
You can receive hundreds of recommendations of easy songs to play, but you have to find some song that you really want to learn. It does you no good to learn a song that only has two chords in it, if you don't even know or like the song.
Purchasing Tab Books for $14.95+ at Music Stores, Hastings, Book Stores is not a bad idea either. Just pick out an album from your favorite band / musician and start plucking away. Some of the songs might seem too difficult and overwhelming, but you would be suprised in how fast you can improve on difficult songs if you keep trying. The most important thing is to find a song that you would be really excited and happy to learn, regardless of it's level of difficulty.
Good Luck.

Oh Oh!
Almost anything Nirvana, especially "Come As You Are"
Almost anything Green Day.
All of their songs are very similar so once he learns one or two he will be able to quickly pick up the others then learn other things. Plus, these songs usually sound okay on an acoustic guitar or electric and they are easily recongnizable.
Goodluck
Also a little later, try some Offspring, Bush, White Stripes etc.

Google "Barre Chords." Once he learns how to play Barre chords and can memorize the chords, he'll be able to play a lot of songs by ear. If he wants to learn some fairly easy songs for the acoustic guitar, check your local music store for a guitar book for songs by The Eagles. Most of them aren't tough.

Songs with simple major chord patterns, like G, D, and A. Dylan's Tambourine Man is G, D, and A over and over. Gloria (old song G - L - O - R - I - A) is also G, D, and A real fast over and over. Then you can build on that with Amin, Emin, C7, F, D (House of the Rising Sun), and a bunch of others once you learn those chords.

I am self taught off of tabs, not sheet music, and the first songs I learned were bad moon rising by creedence clearwater revival, burn one down by ben harper and wish you were here by pink floyd. Those were the easiest for me to learn. Hope that helps!
