It depends on what equipment you're using and how you encode the songs your transferring. If you're ripping the songs from a cd you can increase or decrease the Kbps of the file you're storing on your computer. High Kbps like 192 improve audio quality but require more storage space. Lower Kbps like 96Kbps will lower audio quality but take up less space. At 128Kbps (pretty much average quality) you're looking at about 1 MB per minute of song. If every song is 4 minutes, that's about 250 songs, though some of that GB on an MP3 player is taken up by the MP3 player software, so more like 225.

The supplier will always tell you that you can stick on 240-250 tracks on 1GB, but in reality, it's more like 100

it depends on the bitrate..for instance...i have a 512 MB mp3 player. i can get 250 songs on it if all of my songs have a bitrate of 64 Kbps. but, if all my songs are 128 kbps, i can only get 70-100 songs on it. the downside is that less kbps, the lower quality the song. but when u have earphones and an mp3 player, quality doesnt matter THAT much, as opposed to if u were going to play 64K songs on a stereo with loud speakers. u can find out the bitrate by right clicking on the song in windows media player in itunes and going to "properties" or "get info".
if u sync the songs on ur mp3 player using windows media player, u can easily change the bitrate to a lower one by going to Tools>Options>Devices>(choose name of mp3 player)> and then change the maximum bitrate in settings.
when u start syncronizing the songs, windows media player will convert all of the songs to your selected bitrate.
however, if u use itunes...u cannot do this, so u r lost. as far as i know.
