Well, of course Richard Nixon was the Vice-President To Dwight Eisenhower, however I think that you are probably referring to Checkers his family dog. Nixon used his "Checkers" speech to assure himself that he would be on the ticket again with President Eisenhower (who, it was thought wanted to to dump Nixon for another candidate). The speech made a middle class hero out of Nixon, something that, looking back, was an extremely hard thing to do and Eisenhower had little choice but to keep Nixon on the ticket. Checkers saved Nixon's political life.
