In the 1950's, Richard Nixon saved himself with the "Checkers Speech," but he was first vaulted to notoriety in 1948 as a result of his involvement with the "Pumpkin Papers."

Well, of course Richard Nixon was the Vice-President To Dwight Eisenhower, however I think that you are probably referring to Checkers his family dog. Nixon used his "Checkers" speech to assure himself that he would be on the ticket again with President Eisenhower (who, it was thought wanted to to dump Nixon for another candidate). The speech made a middle class hero out of Nixon, something that, looking back, was an extremely hard thing to do and Eisenhower had little choice but to keep Nixon on the ticket. Checkers saved Nixon's political life.

He was the most responsible for putting a known communist spy named Alger Hiss in jail. Hiss was a high official in both the Roosevelt and Truman administrations and was stoutly defended by both. When communism fell in eastern Europe and the various secret police departments released their records it was overwhelmingly confirmed that Nixon (as well as Senator Joe McCarthy) were correct in their assertions that there were numerous communist spies in our government.
