there is also a engine code in your serial number that tell what engines in the vehicle :)

if you are talking about an engine code it is the 8th digit starting from the left of the VIN going right. The VIN is a 17 digit # found on the dash from the outside on the drivers side or you can look on the registration. It will be similar to this

15G99523GL0123456

the last six are the sequince the vehicl was made at the plant. The L would represent the year which in this case L stands for 1990. The 3 would be the engine code. Hope this is what you are talking about.

Its the manufacturers serial production number usually stamped on the engine block. The location varies. Some engines may not have a serial number only a casting number. The casting number is a code that shows where it was made, the month , day and year.
Sometimes the casting number is only an identification of the type of engine block.
