When buying one you sniff them at the stem section. No smell - under ripe. The stronger the smell, the more ripe the fruit. Too pungent = over ripe. Refrigerate when they have a strong smell but not too strong. (Too strong =cut up.) Once refrigerated, need to keep checking it. First sign of soft spot - cut up and have to eat within a couple of days. Best tasting is home grown. Not that hard to grow - ground vine that takes up a lot of summer garden space. Usually plant when other plantings start to fade.
