Charlies Soap (can only be found online). I cloth diaper my toddlers and this soap is thorough, effective, and gentle. Best stuff I've ever used!

I suspect you can find an advocate for every brand of detergent made. IMHO, the best way to have clean clothes is:
1) Pretreat spots and stains
2) Presort and wash whites, darks and colors appropriately.
3) Use softened water
4)Use an adequate but not excessive amount of detergent
5) Use Oxyclean or an equivilant product. (Many of the higher priced name brand detergents add oxy cleaning agents) but adding your own will ensure it.
6) Use bleach and color safe bleach as appropriate
7) Use fabric softener in rinse cycle.
If you follow these steps, I doubt that it matters what color the container is that your detergent comes in.

My personal experience says Tide. I have been married for 20 years with kids for almost 18 years - doing a lot of laundry all of this time. I have tried every brand out there just about - and Tide cleans the best.

I use liquid Tide (without bleach). Between that and some Spray N Wash, it could take any food or grease stain out of my clothes from cooking at a restaurant. It would even save them from pen marks and accidentally washed lipstick!
(I used warm water for the wash)

Tide and Arm and Hammer both work well. I prefer Tide since it does seem to get the clothes cleaner but Arm and Hammer also does a good job.

My 10 year old grandson has a classmate who posed this question as a science fair project..
He did the research, and Gain won hands down.
And since we all know parents do these science fair projects, one would assume the parent who did the laundry participated and now uses Gain. and i, of course, now use gain but really can't tell any difference.
