It's complicated, but it gets cold in winter because of the tilt of the earth. During the winter months, the earth is tilted away from the sun, which means the sun's rays hit the ground for less hours every day and at an increased angle (ever notice how the sun doesn't get very high, even in the middle of the day, during winter?). This means less heat.
Less heat = colder. This is an extremely simplified answer.
